With the form of a flying bird in mind, Calatrava designed an expansive reinforced concrete roof that is supported centrally with only one column.  The column appears to show the stress of the downward forces transferred to it from the roof, an elegant extra.

Adding to the dramatic effect, the roof seems to be seperated from the walls of the building.
