While the Gentil Bridge incorporates trademark Calatrava-isms, such as the canted arch and cantilevered roadbed, it appears to be fairly subdued in it's design as compared to other Calatrava designed bridges.
However, this unbuilt competition entry does much to oppose the forces that fight against it. The unassuming arch counters the weight of the roadbed, which because of the cantilevered design, must also resist rotation around the roadbed and arch joint. Beyond this, the roadbed must be made to resist buckling, given the extreme weight of the long central span. This design is truly extraordinary in it's apparent plain-ness.
As a side note, the winning entry, a more conventional design, was never built as a result of new policies in planning.
