About the Bridge

This bridge design was a replacement for a design that had come into trouble under it's original sponsors.  The local authorities commissioned Calatrava to design a bridge that remained true to the original idea, a statement symbolizing the trade of land between the connecting municipalities.

The deck is made largely of glass, a material not often found in bridges, and rarely seen as a structural element in any structures.  Along with the glass are more common materials, such as steel tubing and concrete.  These elements themselves are made in a way that reflects the sweeping parabolic form of the bridge design.

Problems with the bridge
What can one utter in the presence of absolute genius? As an engineer and a lover of the beautiful, I can only say that this most amazing structure literally took my breath away and brought tears of joy. When I first saw the computer illustrations of Santiago Calatrava’s design for the permanent PATH terminal I realized that it was all there: sadness, tribute, beauty, strength, and optimism; the white starkness of its skeletal composition embodying our solemn remembrance of the destruction of the two towers; the balance of an otherwise enormous steel and glass building transformed into a delicately expressive sculpture; a most daring manifestation of the state of the art in construction technology and structural engineering. Calatrava’s wonderfully lyrical creation is an assertive expression of the best in our humanity: most aggressive and refreshingly optimistic. I believe that it will transport us onto a better future.

Answer to your question re Calatrava
I was a bit confused at first, too. However, if you look in the upper right hand corner of the picture site, in very small print, is the location of each structure. I was in Bilbao and walked across this bridge. It was a thrill.
