The Caballeros Footbridge Project was an entry in a competition held by the city-fathers of Lerida, Spain. Though never built, this bridge was meant to be an extension to the Calle des Caballeros, connecting an older urban area with a natural area on the far side of the river.
Because of instability of the land on the rural side, much of the weight of the bridge had to be transferred to the urban side, creating the need for a Calatrava-esque cantilever. Symbolically, the leaning of the pylon and the widening of the cable stays toward the park acts as an emphasis to the meeting of the urban with the country.
The walkway over the river is covered with an aluminum canopy with glazing, allowing a protected yet open view of the landscape surrounding the bridge.
