The Alcoy Bridge was the second design submitted by Calatrava for a bridge to connect the Zona Norte neighborhood with the viaduct area of Alcoy, Spain. The need for a bridge in this region had been a hotly debated topic, but the design was commissioned anyway.
The tilt of the arch takes advantage of the ideal inclination for static forces (70º) and uses cables to support the bridge roadbed. The cables are attached at the edge of the walkway, rather than between the pedestrian and automobile decks, to further accentuate the bridge's asymmetric design.
