The second book in the series that began with the excellent book "Calatrava Bridges," this book is easily the most most in-depth look at the buildings of Calatrava. Fashioned in the same way of it's predecessor, this book gives great detail about the design process and intricacies of his buildings.

Calatrava: Art Works Santiago Calatrava: Art Works - Laboratory of Ideas, Forms and Structures
Michael Levin, Santiago Calatrava
Copyright 2003 Princeton Architectural Press

This book contains a selection of over 200 drawings, water colours and depictions of sculptures, chosen by the architect and the author because they are particularly well-suited to showing the significance of his artistic work as the basis for his architectural designs. A drawing is always the starting point for an entire laboratory of ideas. Many of the themes and forms which Calatrava investigates and develops on this level are subsequently transformed into sculptures and go on to provide the inspiration for his bridges, railway stations, airports, museums and even dining tables.

What Is a Bridge? The Making of Calatrava's Bridge in Seville What Is a Bridge? The Making of Calatrava's Bridge in Seville

This book is a case study of the process of building the Alamillo Bridge in Seville, Spain. One of the few books, if not the only, to target one Calatrava project, this is a must-have for anyone who wants to see what goes into building a Calatrava work. The book describes in detail the process of design and construction, giving insight into Calatrava's decision-making process. Technical information, such as engineering calculations, is included as well.

"This is the first time that I have made the commitment to give a series of talks with the specific intention of communicating my experience. The things I am saying, I am saying for the next generation-people who will set and invent other styles and who will find their own way, just as I have integrated the works of those who have been working before me." - Santiago Calatrava in Conversations with Students

This book presents a fairly comprehensive overview of Calatrava's works, with many pictures. It includes some background on many of his projects, including pictures of some of his watercolor sketches. This is a good starter book, as it is fairly inexpensive and not overpowering.

Calatrava Berlin: Five Projects

This very well illustrated book takes a look at 5 rejected projects Calatrava had designed for the City of Berlin. The designs were for a train station, a sports park, restoration and new construction on the Reichstag building for when the Bundestag returns from Bonn, as well as two bridges.

I can't say that I know anything about this book, but it appears that it covers Calatrava's amazing use of dynamic forms.

A good all around look at some of the first works of Calatrava, both bridges and buildings. This book is out of print, but Amazon says they can try to get it.

A reprint (and presumably an update) of a good general overview of Calatrava and his works.
